Baker Volunteer Guidelines 

At Baking a Difference we have our baking volunteers follow specific guidelines to create the safest and cleanliest baking environment. We want each person in our community to receive safe, well-prepared, and nourished baked goods they will enjoy.

4. Allergen Awareness

Common allergens include:

  • Milk

  • Eggs

  • Wheat

  • Peanuts

  • Tree nuts

  • Soy

  • Sesame

Volunteers must:

  • Accurately report ingredients used.

  • Never claim a product is allergen-free unless specifically approved by the organization.

  • Label allergens on packaging.

3. Ingredient Safety 

Volunteers must:

  • Use fresh ingredients.

  • Check expiration dates before use.

  • Store ingredients according to manufacturer recommendations.

  • Discard ingredients that appear spoiled or contaminated.

Do not use:

  • Expired ingredients

  • Damaged food packaging

  • Homemade fillings requiring refrigeration unless specifically approved

2. Clean Kitchen

Before beginning:

  • Clean and sanitize countertops and work surfaces.

  • Wash mixing bowls, utensils, pans, and equipment.

  • Ensure sinks and food preparation areas are clean.

  • Keep food away from household chemicals and cleaning products.

During baking:

  • Use clean utensils and equipment.

  • Avoid cross-contamination between ingredients.

  • Keep pets out of food preparation areas.

1. Good Personal Hygiene  

Before baking, volunteers must:

  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.

  • Wash hands before handling ingredients and after touching phones, pets, hair, faces, or other potentially contaminated surfaces.

  • Wear clean clothing while baking.

  • Tie back long hair.

  • Avoid baking when sick or experiencing symptoms such as:

    • Fever

    • Vomiting

    • Diarrhea

    • Persistent coughing

    • Contagious illness

Volunteers should not smoke, vape, or use tobacco products while preparing food.
